ET Mitchell
Commissioner ET Mitchell was elected to the Craven County Board of Commissioners in 2022 and 2018, after previously serving on the Board of Alderman for the City of New Bern. She retired to New Bern in 2009 from the Washington D.C. area after spending two decades as a Naval Intelligence Officer with specialities in crisis operations, counter-espionage and anti-submarine warfare. Although her family is from the Deep South, Commissioner Mitchell grew up all over the United States; her father was a career Air Force officer. She is a graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee..
Commissioner Mitchell lives in Trent Woods. Her late husband, W. G. Champion Mitchell, was a retired CEO and attorney. Her son, Morgan, and daughter-in-law, Jenna, are part of Austin’s tech industry and live in Texas.
Commissioner Mitchell has served on the North Carolina Military Affairs Commission since 2014 to represent MCAS Cherry Point and Fleet Readiness Center-East. She is also a member of American Legion Post 539 and the Military Officers of America Association.
As a Commissioner, she represents Craven County on the following Boards:

- Craven Community College
- New Bern Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
- Craven Pamlico Regional Library System
- New Bern Craven County Library
She previously served on the North Carolina Veterans Affairs Commission, the Board of Visitors for UNC Lineberger Cancer Research Center, the Craven Community College Foundation, New Bern Housing Authority. Twin Rivers YMCA, the New Bern Preservation Foundation, and the Craven Literacy Council.
